Many vets around the world, and almost all Israeli vets, stand by the outdated belief that cats should not be spayed/neutered before 6 months old. The problem is that cats here (maybe it is a local phenomenon?) go into their first heat by 4 months. Cats can and should be sterilized BEFORE then. A cat in heat will do anything it can to escape and reproduce, the little hornballs. They are unstoppable. Oftentimes, they don’t return home afterwards. Always, the mom and kittens are at risk of death. Always, they contribute to the horrendous crisis of overpopulation. This post was originally shared by a member of TPR who recently adopted a female kitten from the streets:
“It is kitten season and in the blink of an eye cats will show us what effective breeders they are.
A few months ago I foster-failed with a young cat I found on the street. She was maybe about 3 months old at the time.
I wanted and planned to have her spayed however I had no transportation and then (the Covid-19) quarantine hit.
I WAS VIGILANT about keeping her indoors. Needless to say she snuck out (for a total of 10 minutes) and voila!, that little love sick lady had a quickie with one of my outdoor feral fellas! 🐈🍆💜
Today I took my little Mayan Coyote Katty to be neutered and to terminate her pregnancy.
Prior to this I did not know that aborting a litter was even possible. I agonised over the choice. I consulted with my vet and with Danni Meyerson, who is my cat-guru. She knows all things cat. All the experts said it was the right thing to do. I put my nerves and sadness and guilt aside and took her in today.
The vet reminded me that a cat this young is not physically in the best position to deliver kittens and it could endanger her life.
I WISH I COULD HAVE, WOULD HAVE SPAYED HER SOONER. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET YOUR KITTIES DESEXED BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
My sweet girl is doing well and resting.”
